Location Tracking

Location Technologies

Ubisense’s SmartSpace software makes it easy to build powerful location-aware solutions using a wide range of location systems. These include technologies that span barcode RFID, BLE, GPS and optical sensing capabilities, as well as passive hardware devices (RFID readers), handheld peripherals (barcode scanners) and UI/display devices such as tablet computers.

Comparison of Location Technologies

Ubisense works closely with customers to identify the right sensing technologies for their use-cases, as there is typically no one-size-fits-all solution for the spectrum of location problems that usually exist in a facility.

How RTLS works

Locating with Radio Frequency (RF) Signals

Radio-frequency (RF) systems calculate location using either the distance of a transmitter relative to a receiver, or the angle (direction) of a transmitter relative to a receiver.  Measurements from multiple receivers are cross-referenced to determine location.

Challenges of Locating Indoors using RF Signals

Only direct path signals between transmitter and receiver give a reliable basis of measurement.  With conventional RF, reflections of the signal in indoor environments distort the direct path signal.  When direct path and reflected signals overlap it makes interpreting accurate location difficult.

Locating Indoors with Ultra-Wideband

With Ultra-Wideband (UWB) the signal pulses are much shorter and use a wider frequency bandwidth. The shorter UWB pulses don’t overlap with reflected signals, which means the direct path signal is more easily distinguished from reflections, making interpreting accurate location easier.

Ubisense Dimension4 UWB

DIMENSION4™ is the result of decades of experience delivering industrial-scale, real-world solutions that pin-point the true 3D location, movement and identity of people and things in critical processes.

Overview

The Ubisense DIMENSION4 range of ultra-wideband (UWB) sensors are precision measurement devices, containing an array of antennas and UWB radio receivers. The sensors detect UWB pulses from Ubisense DIMENSION4 Tags, allowing the Ubisense location system to find the tag positions to a very high accuracy in three dimensions, in real-time.

Ultra-Precise. Ultra-Reliable. Ultra-Wideband.

Only DIMENSION4 measures both Time-Difference-of-Arrival (TDoA) and 2-axis Angle-of-Arrival (AoA) of UWB signals in the same system, providing up to 3x more location information than comparable systems.  Accurate 3D tracking information is possible when only two sensors detect a tag, reducing the infrastructure requirements and minimizing cost.  Advanced filtering algorithms select only the most reliable measurements from the excess of location data, providing an unmatched ability to cope with obstructed and reflected signals.

Reliable, accurate location. Every time.

RTLS Comparison

The ability to better filter out reflected signals and a sophisticated sensor design uniquely combining both TDoA and 2-Axis AoA makes Ubisense Dimension4 Ultra-Wideband the most precise and reliable RTLS available.
