Navigating Career Paths at Ubisense: Insights from David

David’s career at Ubisense reads like a masterclass in professional evolution within the fast-paced world of technology and manufacturing. His journey, characterized by a relentless pursuit of growth and a knack for navigating through various roles, offers a glimpse into a varied and interesting career path.

Early Exposure and Foundation Building

David’s foray into the manufacturing realm began before he had even stepped out of college, laying the groundwork for a career that would span various facets of software engineering and project management. “Before I even got out of college I had a lot of exposure there,” David recalls, hinting at the early experiences that set the stage for his later achievements. “I was doing internships, you know, full-time opportunities over the summer or even taking semesters off of school to work in various manufacturing plants, so I was exposed to the manufacturing world.” This early exposure wasn’t just about gaining knowledge; it was about immersing himself in the tech ecosystem, understanding its nuances, and preparing for a future where these insights would become invaluable.

The Lockheed Martin Chapter

After college, David joined Lockheed Martin, a move that thrust him into the world of systems engineering. Despite this being somewhat removed from his academic focus, it was here that David honed his ability to adapt and learn on the job. “I was plugged into the network engineering space a little bit, even though that’s not at all what I was studying at school,” he shares. “So, that was the first example of, OK, well, teach yourself to learn, right?”  This phase of his career underscored the importance of flexibility and the willingness to venture into unfamiliar territories, traits that would define his burgeoning professional ethos. “But I realised after a while that I wanted to be in a smaller organisation, a little more customer-focused, a little more going on, a little faster pace. So somehow I wound up at Ubisense.”

Transition to Ubisense

David’s transition to Ubisense marked a significant shift in his career trajectory. Initially joining as an applications delivery engineer in 2018, he quickly embraced the multifaceted nature of working in a smaller, dynamic company. This role was just the beginning of a series of transitions that saw David evolve from a technical specialist to a strategic thinker, navigating through project management to his current pre-sales consultancy role. “So originally it was applications delivery, engineering and then from there, I moved more into a combined engineering and project management role,” he recounts, reflecting on the fluidity of roles and responsibilities at Ubisense. “In early 2018, I came on to the delivery team as an Applications Delivery Engineer for the Americas. I did that for a few years and then started transitioning more into the project management side of things, as Ubisense was willing to give me a chance to gain some of that experience. I was very interested in that.”

David then spent two years working at a more traditional software company, rounding out his experience, before returning to Ubisense nine months ago. “Since I came back, I joined the Pre-Sales Team and I have really been enjoying the role. I am interested in the business side of things and I feel like every step of my journey has been moving more and more in that direction. Having to keep the needs of the business in mind and being able to speak about both technical and business needs directly with customers. I like that.”

Embracing a Multidisciplinary Approach

At Ubisense, David’s career trajectory is a testament to his multidisciplinary approach. From engineering to project management, and eventually to pre-sales consultancy, each role offered him a new set of challenges and learning opportunities. “And now I’m a “Pre-Sales Engineering Consultant” I think is what they’re calling us currently,” David states, highlighting the continuous evolution of his professional identity and the evolving roles within the company itself.

The Ubisense Differentiator

What sets Ubisense apart, according to David, is its embrace of autonomy and the expectation for employees to adeptly juggle multiple responsibilities. “You really have to be able to wear a lot of different hats and be able to operate with a severe amount of autonomy,” he advises, pointing out the characteristics of Ubisense that demand a proactive and self-driven approach from its employees.
